Live Like You're Dying

A 7-Session Course For
Heart & Soul-Centered End of Life Planning
Picture

Live Like You're Dying is a 7-session, in-person experience for those willing to hold their mortality close as they explore, practice, and learn how to be more present with their inevitable death while soulfully planning for it.

Making heart and soul-centered decisions to prepare for your death requires deep inquiry around five core life facets.
  1. Physical
  2. Mental
  3. Emotional
  4. Spiritual
  5. Practical

The seven, 90-minute sessions take place in small groups (no more than 12 per group), fostering intimate connections with like-hearted community.
Live Like You're Dying Runs 7 Consecutive Thursdays
October 9 - November 20

Thursday Afternoons 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

When death comes...I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?... I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.
- Mary Oliver from When Death Comes
Why On Earth Would I Take an End-of-Life Planning Course?

Everyone knows they're going to die someday, but the airy idea of "someday" keeps them from making essential decisions - and plans - for when that moment arrives. After serving people on their deathbeds for 15+ years, I've seen over and over again that most people don't die how they expected to. Thus, they regret plans never made, situations never accounted for, and things never communicated to loved ones about their full-spectrum wishes or intentions.

Live Like You're Dying is designed for anyone who:
  • Knows they need to complete their advanced directives, will/estate plans, or to decide what types of things would bring them comfort in their last months/weeks/days/hours, but never seems to get around to it. This course provides the framework to finalize plans in a tender, full-spectrum way.
  • Has the basic "business paperwork" done, but would like their family, friends, and healthcare/end-of-life team to know about their wishes regarding their end physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort.
  • Wants to ensure their partners, loved ones, and closest friends can be present with them at their bedside, rather than having to be in business mode because there were no clear directions/resources.
  • Has a general idea of what's available for end-of-life or after-death care, but aren't fans of mainstream models or would like to learn more about all of the options available to create personalized plans that reflect their life.
  • Want to minimize the stress, tension, or squabbling that occurs (in even the closest family systems) when someone is dying and there's no clear, documented plan of what they wanted (and didn't want).
  • Wants to particpate as a couple, family, friend group, book club, religious/spiritual school class, women's/men's circle, or other close-knit group that appreciates the idea of doing this work together, knowing they'll have a better understanding of what each of them wants - and doesn't want - at the end of their lives.
  • Feels they lack an end-of-life support system and want to do this work in a caring community while learning more about local support options (friends, neighbors, death doulas, volunteers, etc.) who can be part of their death care team.

Ultimately, this work is dedicated to those who want to die with a minimum of regrets and with a sense of fulfillment, gratitude, and acceptance on their deathbed.

"Dying wise is a moral obligation. Dying well is not a matter of enlightened self-interest or personal preference...
Dying well must become an obligation that living people and dying people owe to each other and to those to come."

-Stephen Jenkinson in Die Wise
What Can I Expect During The Course?
This is an in-person course, spanning seven weeks of 60 to 90-minute sessions. In addition to weekly presentations, coursework, and homework, we use visual resources, poetry, music, breathwork, gentle movement, and other modalities that foster a quiet mind, embodied presence, and an activated soul.

At the end of each week, you'll receive a worksheet (homework) with inquiry questions for you to answer by the time you attend the next session.
  • Week 1 (10/9) - Introduction (60 minutes): Get to know your fellow travelers during the first session, while experiencing a gentle taste of what will come during the next several weeks.
  • Week 2 (10/16) - Physical Domain: In addition to reviewing the inquiry homework, you'll have access to resources and ideas that provide a more comfortable and sensory-soothing death. This includes identifying your death care community.
  • Week 3 (10/23) - Mental Domain. After reviewing the inquiry work, we'll talk about ways you can prepare for peace of mind while also ensuring loved ones or your community have tangible reminders of your life's legacy (or imprint).
  • Week 4 (10/30) - Emotional Domain. During the review of the inquiry work, we'll discuss the range of feelings and emotions that arise over a lifetime and how they impact the death and dying space. The group will explore exercises and processes that support emotional processes, forgiveness, accountability, and so on.
  • Week 5 (11/6) - Spiritual Domain. Regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs, there are always questions that arise in the Spiritual Domain. The group will embark on rich discussions about what this domain means to them and the actions or offerings that would help them feel more supported.
  • Week 6 (11/13) - Practical Domain. After reviewing the inquiry homework, we'll talk about the varied options available at the end of your life, so many of which are rarely discussed in mainstream end-of-life care literature.
  • Week 7 (11/20) - Closing Session. During this session, clients who submitted their work for all five domains are presented with a personal “Vision Map” - a physical symbol of the work they’ve done and the steps they want to take, providing invaluable peace of mind and a powerful resource for their loved ones or end-of-life care team.

In addition to interacting with homework reflection questions, you’ll receive access to ample resources, including articles and videos, covering aspects of EOL planning. You're also encouraged to do research on your own, helping you further identify concrete action steps to move forward with what matters most to you at this moment in time.
Cost & Registration: Thursdays 10/9 - 11/20
I offer Sliding Scale Fee Tiers, trusting you’ll pay what you can generously afford:
